You drink coffee I drink tea my dear
Forget boxes of chamomile, or even English teapots. A new specialty tea company in Berlin’s affluent district Charlottenburg offers a different route to high-end ginger, lavender and Moroccan mint teas. Founder Jens De Gruyter is a true tea specialist, his idea for P&T emerged from the concept of living and integrating with the 'communication, creativity and culture' that accompanies tea drinking. He'd also like to quell two particular myths that are associated with tea: that it is complicated, and that it's slow. In actual fact, at the connoisseur end of the market, tea is easier and quicker than coffee.
De Gruyter's uncle was a tea trader and when his family emigrated to Canada, his uncle would always send him 'survival kits' containing tea. He has never really drank coffee but always introduced others to the pleasures of drinking tea. During travels he discovered more teas and learned all about their traditions. Which naturally developed the urge to make a career out of his obsession.
doing nothing is respectable at tea
The stores of P & T are intimate, subdued temples of tea that deliberately break from traditional tea retail models. Teas are laid out and displayed according to an intuitive system, they are presented with short description texts that also mention each tea’s aroma notes. Small glass dishes containing the dry tea leaf allow visitors to smell and inspect each tea before buying it.
